OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY ASSESSMENTS
Understanding Needs, Abilities and Challenges
Some key areas for occupational therapy assessments include:
- Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): an individual's ability to perform self-care tasks such as bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting and feeding.
- Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs): an individual's skills in more complex activities such as: meal preparation, household chores, medication management and managing finances
- Sensory Processing: how individuals process and respond to sensory information including: touch, sight, sound, taste and smell.
- Motor Skills: an individual's fine motor skills (e.g., handwriting, manipulation of small objects) and gross motor skills (e.g., balance, coordination, mobility).
- Cognitive Abilities: cognitive functions such as: attention, memory, problem-solving, decision-making and executive functioning.
- Perceptual Skills: an individual's ability to interpret and make sense of sensory information including: spatial awareness, depth perception and body awareness.
- Social and Emotional Functioning: an individual's social skills, emotional regulation, self-awareness and ability to engage in meaningful social interactions.
- Environmental Factors: the impact of the physical and social environment on an individual's occupational performance, including accessibility, safety and support systems.
By assessing these areas occupational therapists can identify an individual’s strengths, limitations and areas for intervention. This information guides the development of personalised treatment plans to promote independence, enhance functional abilities and improve overall well-being. We provide occupational therapy assessments for individuals on the Gold Coast, Logan, Toowoomba, Brisbane and Hervey Bay

COMMONLY USED OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY ASSESSMENTS
Some commonly used assessments at SHY Rehab include:
- WHODAS 2.0 (World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0): It assesses functioning and disability across various life domains, including cognition, mobility, self-care and participation, providing a comprehensive evaluation of overall functioning and determining the impact of disability on the individual’s daily life.
- MoCA (Montreal Cognitive Assessment): It measures cognitive abilities including: attention, memory, language and visuospatial skills. The MoCA is a widely used screening tool to detect mild cognitive impairments and assess cognitive functioning in individuals with suspected cognitive decline.
- FIM (Functional Independence Measure) and WeeFIM (Functional Independence Measure for Children): These assessments evaluate an individual's level of independence in activities of daily living such as: self-care, mobility and cognition. The FIM and WeeFIM provide standardised measures of functional abilities and help in determining the level of assistance required for individuals to perform daily tasks.
- PEDI (Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory): It assesses functional abilities and caregiver assistance required for children with disabilities across self-care, mobility and social function. The PEDI provides valuable information about a child's functional limitations and helps in planning interventions and monitoring progress over time.
- LSP-16 (Life Skills Profile - 16): It measures an individual's performance and satisfaction with various life skills including: self-care, community integration and productivity, assessing overall life skills and identify areas for support or intervention
- McMaster Handwriting Assessment: It evaluates handwriting skills including: legibility, letter formation and speed. Which enables an assessment of an individual's fine motor skills and handwriting abilities, which are important for academic performance and daily activities requiring written communication.
- Vineland-3: It assesses adaptive behaviour including: communication, daily living skills, socialisation and motor skills providing a comprehensive measure of an individual's adaptive functioning across various domains.
- MMSE (Mini-Mental State Examination): It is a widely used screening tool to assess cognitive function, including orientation, memory, attention, language and visuospatial skills identifying potential cognitive impairments and providing a snapshot of an individual's cognitive abilities.
